the Birthmark

Older illustrations from the short story "The Birthmark" by Nathaniel Hawthorne that I finally got around to scanning. It is a great story and a quick read. Click the link if you want to check it out, it's well worth it.

My best friend Becky posed for this image.

Fashion doll!

I have been working on a paper doll for my fashion history class. We have to do a fashion journal for our final project, illustrating one look from each era. I chose to kill two birds and supplement my illustration portfolio by doing a series that would fit with the rest of my work. I am having a blast, but I have to admit that I may have taken on a bit too much! I have waaayyyy too much to do. Oh well. I love ones that I finished. Here are a few:

My "naked" doll. There was no way I was going to do a typical fashion illustration model. I like my girls with curves :)

A few pieces from the empire era - around the time Napoleon came to power in France. I did several more parts to this, but I love the simplicity of just the dress and poke bonnet.

The ridiculous "romantic" look. This was right with England's Queen Victoria started to reign at age 16 and her innocence inspired fashion for a while. The crazy hair style is called an "Apollo's knot".

Trip to the Zoo!

Yesterday I went to the zoo with my friend Sean to do some drawing. Unfortunately, it started to rain, so we didn't get to do as much sketching as we hoped, but I had a great time and got at least some good drawing in. I don't get many opportunities draw realistically, so this was a nice treat and a reminder of how much I love it. :)

Swans that sat still right in front of us:

YAKS! They think they're sooo cool:

Bighorn Sheep: (while I was drawing this super cute little boy toddled all around where I was sitting. I was very tempted to stop drawing the sheep and start drawing him, but I didn't know what his mom would think! So ...sheep it is :) )

Wolf: (This one is actually from a photograph. The real thing wouldn't sit still!)

Finally, here is another emotion painting from my series. The rest can be found here. Happy:

Blanket

Hello! I thought this piece fit this weeks topic well. The Haiku (which is missing a word) is by Syracuse Professor Arthur Flowers. The quote is supposed to read:

crystal quilts of ice
fluffy blankets of snow with
dreams that warm the soul

Enjoy!
